Best Floating Villages Near Siem Reap: Kampong Phluk, Kampong Khleang or Chong Kneas?

Compare the best floating villages near Siem Reap by distance, scenery, season, atmosphere, boat experience and who each one suits.

Updated 20 Oct 2026

The three floating-village names most visitors hear around Siem Reap are Kampong Phluk, Kampong Khleang and Chong Kneas. They are not interchangeable. Distance, scale, season and tourism intensity all change the experience.

My short answer: Kampong Phluk is the easiest all-round choice for a half-day trip, Kampong Khleang is better if you want a larger and more distant community with less emphasis on quick tourism, and Chong Kneas is the easiest geographically but the one I would choose most carefully.

Kampong Phluk: best all-round choice for most first-time visitors

Kampong Phluk is popular because it combines stilted houses, lake access and flooded-forest scenery in the wetter months. It is close enough to Siem Reap for a half-day excursion without turning the day into a long road trip.

The experience changes a lot with water level. In the wet season, boats move through much higher water and the flooded forest can become a major part of the visit. In lower-water periods, the stilted architecture is more exposed.

See our Kampong Phluk guide.

Kampong Khleang: best for scale and a longer trip

Kampong Khleang is farther from Siem Reap and generally requires more time, but that extra distance can be worth it if the floating-village experience itself is one of your priorities.

I would choose it over Kampong Phluk if I had enough time and wanted a larger community setting rather than the easiest half-day tour.

See Kampong Khleang guide.

Chong Kneas: closest and easiest, but choose the experience carefully

Chong Kneas is the most convenient from Siem Reap and has an official boat-ticket structure through Angkor Enterprise. That makes logistics straightforward.

The downside is that it has long been the most heavily touristed of the three, so I would pay close attention to exactly what a tour includes rather than booking purely because it is closest.

Current Chong Kneas boat prices are published by Angkor Enterprise.

Kampong Phluk vs Kampong Khleang

Choose Kampong Phluk for convenience and a shorter day. Choose Kampong Khleang if you are willing to travel farther for a larger-scale community experience.

For the direct comparison, see Kampong Phluk vs Kampong Khleang.

Which is best in rainy season?

Higher water levels make the lake and flooded-forest experience more dramatic. Kampong Phluk is especially sensitive to this seasonal change, which is why the same village can feel very different at different times of year.

Which is best in dry season?

Lower water exposes more of the tall stilts and dry-season landscape. The visual experience is different rather than simply worse, but expectations matter.

Which is best for photography?

I would choose based on the type of photography you want. Kampong Phluk for flooded forest and stilt-house contrast, Kampong Khleang for scale and community context, Chong Kneas for the easiest access to lake scenes.

How much time should you allow?

Kampong Phluk and Chong Kneas can fit into a half-day more naturally. Kampong Khleang deserves more time because the road transfer is longer.

Ethics and responsible visiting

These are communities, not theme parks. I would avoid tours built around intrusive home visits, staged poverty or pressure to make questionable donations. A good tour should explain the lake economy and community respectfully without turning residents into attractions.

My practical choice

First trip and limited time: Kampong Phluk. More time and stronger interest in Tonle Sap life: Kampong Khleang. Chong Kneas: only if convenience is the main priority and the exact boat/tour setup is clear.
