Is Siem Reap worth visiting beyond Angkor Wat? A practical look at the city, food, culture, day trips and who will enjoy it most.
The short answer
Yes, especially if Angkor is already on your Cambodia route. The mistake is treating Siem Reap only as a hotel base and airport stop.
What the city does well
Siem Reap is compact, easy to navigate and packed with restaurants, cafes, markets and tourism services. That makes it one of the easiest places in Cambodia for a first visit.
What it does not do as well
If you want a large city atmosphere, deep nightlife variety or a business district, Phnom Penh is stronger. Siem Reap is more tourism focused.
Who should stay longer
Travelers interested in archaeology, food, photography, cycling and day trips can fill several days without forcing the itinerary.
My practical take
I would not fly in, do one rushed sunrise circuit and leave the same night. The city is more enjoyable when Angkor is only one part of the stay.
