A guide to Neak Pean, the small island sanctuary reached by a long boardwalk on the Angkor Grand Circuit.
Why it feels different
Neak Pean is surrounded by water and approached on a raised boardwalk, which makes the visit feel very different from Angkor's large temple mountains.
The main sanctuary
The central island is compact, so the experience is more about setting and symbolism than scale.
How long to allow
The walk in and out is part of the visit. Do not judge the stop only by the size of the shrine.
Best context
It works best when paired with Preah Khan and Ta Som on the Grand Circuit.
My take
I would keep it on a multi day itinerary because the landscape variety is exactly what prevents temple fatigue.
