A practical Siem Reap guide for 2026 covering Angkor, neighborhoods, food, transport, day trips and how to plan your time.

Why Siem Reap deserves time beyond Angkor

Angkor is the obvious reason to come, but Siem Reap works best when you leave room for food, markets, museums, countryside and a slower evening in town.

How I would structure a first visit

I would give the city and temple complex at least three full days if the schedule allows. One temple day feels rushed. Two or three lets you separate the headline monuments from outer sites and town time.

Where to stay

Old Market and the river are convenient for first timers. Wat Bo works well if you want restaurants and cafes without being directly inside the busiest nightlife streets.

What to do besides temples

Phare, the Angkor National Museum, local markets, cooking classes and countryside trips all make sense between temple days.

Build the trip

The first trip I would build

I would give Angkor two separate sessions, reserve one block for Siem Reap itself, and leave one flexible slot for either Tonle Sap, Kulen or a slower day depending on energy and weather.

Do not let every decision revolve around Angkor

Hotel area, restaurants and evening plans shape the trip more than people expect. A good base can make a temple heavy itinerary feel much easier.
