Old Market vs Wat Bo: Where Should You Stay in Siem Reap?

Compare Old Market and Wat Bo for walkability, food, nightlife, noise, hotels and first-time stays in Siem Reap.

Updated 20 Oct 2026

Old Market and Wat Bo are two of the easiest places to stay in Siem Reap, but they suit slightly different travelers. Old Market wins on immediate nightlife and tourist convenience. Wat Bo wins on balance, restaurants and a calmer atmosphere.

My short answer: choose Old Market if you want to walk out of the hotel and immediately be in the center of everything. Choose Wat Bo if you still want central convenience but care more about restaurants, cafes and quieter nights.

Old Market: what it feels like

The Old Market area is dense, lively and easy. Pub Street, Night Market, the river and a huge number of restaurants are all within walking distance. You rarely need transport for the evening.

The trade-off is obvious: noise, tourism density and less of a neighborhood feel.

Wat Bo: what it feels like

Wat Bo is still central, but it feels more spread out and less intense. The area has become one of the strongest parts of Siem Reap for restaurants and cafes, which is why I often prefer it for stays longer than one or two nights.

You can browse the current Wat Bo hotel selection on Booking.

Which is better for food?

I would give Wat Bo the edge if food matters. Old Market has more immediate choice, but Wat Bo is easier for travelers who care about specific restaurants and cafes rather than simply having everything nearby.

Which is better for nightlife?

Old Market wins. If Pub Street and late bars are part of the plan, being able to walk home is useful.

Which is better for sleep?

Wat Bo usually wins, but hotel position matters more than the district label. A quiet courtyard hotel near Old Market can sleep better than a room on a busy Wat Bo road.

Hotel examples

For a central upscale stay, compare Park Hyatt Siem Reap on Booking. For Wat Bo atmosphere, compare Angkor Village Hotel on Booking.

Which is better for Angkor?

The difference is small enough that I would not choose between them based on Angkor access. A driver can pick you up from either area easily.

My choice

For one or two nights and a first trip, Old Market is extremely convenient. For three or more nights, especially if I care about food and calmer evenings, I would lean Wat Bo.
