Best Time to Visit Angkor Wat: Weather, Crowds & Seasons

The best time to visit Angkor Wat by month, weather, crowds, heat, rain, photography and trip style, with practical 2026 planning advice.

Updated 20 Oct 2026

The best time to visit Angkor Wat depends on what you want to optimize: cooler weather, greener scenery, lower crowd pressure, dramatic skies or the easiest all-day temple conditions.

My short answer: November to February is the easiest period for most first-time visitors because temperatures are generally more comfortable. The rainy season is underrated for photography and greener landscapes, while March to May is the hardest period physically because of heat.

November to February: easiest weather for most visitors

This is the period I would choose for a first trip if comfort matters most. Cooler mornings make long temple days easier, especially if you plan sunrise, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm in one day.

The trade-off is that this is also a popular travel period, so famous sites can feel busier.

March to May: hottest period

The temples are still completely visitable, but the daily rhythm matters more. I would start very early, take a real midday break and consider returning in late afternoon rather than forcing a continuous dawn-to-sunset circuit.

June to October: rainy season

Rainy season does not mean constant rain. You can get heavy showers, dramatic clouds and greener vegetation, with periods of clear weather in between.

The advantages are lush landscapes, atmospheric photography and a different mood around the temples. The disadvantages are slippery stone, humidity and more unpredictable planning.

Best months for photography

For classic clear-sky sunrise images, dry-season mornings are easier to plan. For dramatic skies, reflections, saturated stone and greenery, rainy-season conditions can be much more interesting.

Best months for fewer crowds

Crowd levels vary with holidays, tour cycles and regional travel patterns, so I would not treat one month as permanently empty. Shoulder periods can feel calmer, but the best strategy is still to manage time of day and route order.

Best season for a 1-day Angkor visit

If you have only one day, cooler dry-season weather is the easiest because you have less flexibility to move activities around heat or rain.

Best season for a 3-day pass

With a multi-day pass, almost any season becomes easier. You can spread visits out, skip a stormy afternoon and choose sunrise or late light on different days.

Compare 1-day vs 3-day Angkor pass.

Month-by-month quick guide

  • January: cooler and generally easy for long temple days.
  • February: still comfortable, gradually warmer.
  • March: noticeably hotter, early starts matter.
  • April: very hot, Khmer New Year can change crowds and atmosphere.
  • May: heat and transition toward wetter conditions.
  • June: greener, more humidity and showers.
  • July: rainy-season conditions with lush scenery.
  • August: wet and green, good for atmospheric photography.
  • September: often one of the wetter months.
  • October: transition toward drier weather.
  • November: one of the easiest all-round months.
  • December: cooler, popular and comfortable for sightseeing.

Khmer New Year

Mid-April is a special case. The atmosphere can be memorable, but heat and holiday movement change the normal rhythm of the park.

My practical choice

For a first visit, I would pick November to February if dates are flexible. If photography matters more than comfort, I would not dismiss rainy season. If you travel March to May, redesign the day around heat rather than trying to follow a cool-season itinerary.
