Angkor Small Circuit explained: main temples, route order, timing, sunrise options and how to plan a tuk-tuk day.

What is the Small Circuit?

The Small Circuit is the classic loop through Angkor's central headline temples. It is the route most first-time visitors use when they have only one full temple day.

Main stops

A typical route includes Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon and Ta Prohm, with additional smaller temples depending on time and energy.

How long does it take?

Allow most of a day if this is your first visit. Rushing the loop in a few hours misses the scale and detail that make Angkor extraordinary.

Sunrise or no sunrise?

Sunrise works naturally with the Small Circuit, but it is not compulsory. A later start or reordered route can reduce crowd pressure.

Small Circuit versus Grand Circuit

The Grand Circuit reaches a wider ring of temples. If you have three days, doing both creates a much more complete picture of Angkor.

Use the one-day itinerary and tuk-tuk price guide to organize the logistics.

Practical note

Rules, access conditions and prices can change. For ticketing and visitor regulations, check the official Angkor Enterprise and APSARA National Authority information shortly before your visit.

The route I would protect

Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm are the anchors. Smaller stops should fit around those, not force the major temples into rushed visits.

When to cut the circuit short

If heat or temple fatigue is setting in, I would skip one secondary monument and preserve the last good hour for a site I actually care about.
