Siem Reap to Angkor Wat: Distance, Time, Tuk-Tuk, Car & Bike
Siem Reap to Angkor Wat explained with distance, realistic travel time, tuk-tuk, car, bicycle, sunrise departures and ticket planning.
Updated 20 Oct 2026
Angkor Wat is close enough to Siem Reap that most visitors stay in town and travel to the temples each day. You do not need a hotel next to the park to make early starts practical.
How far is Angkor Wat from Siem Reap?
The exact distance depends on where you stay in Siem Reap, but the journey from the central tourist areas is short enough for a normal morning transfer. What matters more is your hotel location, traffic, ticket arrangements and the entrance route.
How long does it take?
I would allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes from many central Siem Reap hotels to the Angkor Wat area in normal conditions, with extra time if you need to buy a pass, are traveling at peak sunrise departure time or are staying farther out.
Tuk-tuk from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat
A tuk-tuk is the option I would choose for most visitors because you can keep the same driver for the rest of the temple circuit.
Car from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat
A private car is more comfortable but usually unnecessary for the short transfer alone. Its value appears later in the day, especially in heat or on long routes.
Cycling from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat
Cycling is realistic for fit travelers, especially early in the morning, but remember that reaching Angkor Wat is only the beginning. A full circuit adds much more distance plus hours of walking.
Can you walk from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat?
Technically possible from some northern areas, but I would not recommend walking as the normal transport strategy. You would spend energy on the road before the temple visit even begins.
What changes for sunrise?
Sunrise means leaving well before normal breakfast time. Arrange your driver the night before, confirm the pickup location and have your ticket plan sorted.
Read Angkor Wat sunrise guide.
Where does the ticket office fit into the route?
If you need to buy in person, the official Angkor Enterprise ticket office is separate from Angkor Wat itself. Buying online or through another official method can simplify a sunrise morning.
Should you book only the transfer or a full-day driver?
For most visitors, book the full day. Once you finish Angkor Wat, you will probably continue to Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm or another temple. One driver waiting for you is much easier than arranging each segment separately.
My practical take
Do not over-optimize hotel location just to save a few minutes on the Angkor drive. Stay where you want to eat and spend your evenings, then use a reliable driver for temple days.
