How to Get to Angkor Wat From Siem Reap: Tuk-Tuk, Car, Bike or Tour
How to get from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat by tuk-tuk, private car, bicycle, ride-hailing or tour, with sunrise, ticket and route planning advice.
Updated 20 Oct 2026
Getting to Angkor Wat from Siem Reap is straightforward. The real choice is not whether transport exists, but which option makes the most sense for your budget, comfort and the rest of your temple day.
For most first-time visitors, I would hire a tuk-tuk for the full day. A private car is better for heat, families and longer routes. Cycling is rewarding if you are comfortable riding in tropical heat and traffic.
Tuk-tuk: best all-round option
A dedicated tuk-tuk is the classic solution because the driver stays with you and moves between temples all day. This is much easier than arranging a new ride after every stop.
See 2026 Angkor tuk-tuk prices and Angkor by tuk-tuk.
Private car: best for comfort
A car is the option I would choose for families, older travelers, very hot weather or long-distance routes. Air conditioning matters more after several hours of walking than it does at hotel pickup.
Compare tuk-tuk vs car.
Bicycle: best for independent travelers
Cycling gives you maximum independence and can be enjoyable early in the day, but the distances add up quickly once you combine the city ride with a temple circuit.
I would only choose a bicycle if you are comfortable with heat, road conditions and riding after several hours of walking around temples.
Ride-hailing apps
Apps such as Grab or PassApp are useful in Siem Reap, but I would not build a full Angkor day around requesting individual rides. A dedicated driver is simpler once you enter the park.
Organized tour
A tour can combine transport and a guide, which is useful if you want historical interpretation and do not want to manage the route yourself.

How far is Angkor Wat from Siem Reap?
From central Siem Reap, Angkor Wat is close enough that the transfer itself is not the difficult part. Your exact travel time depends on hotel location, ticket arrangements, traffic and whether you stop before reaching the temple.
Do you need to stop at the ticket office?
Not necessarily. Angkor Enterprise currently sells passes through its website, app, kiosks, counters and through tour guides. If you already have a valid pass, you can plan your morning around direct park access.
For current prices and official purchase methods, see Angkor Enterprise.
How early should you leave for sunrise?
For sunrise, leave enough time for hotel pickup, any ticket issue, the drive and the walk from the entrance toward the western ponds. Do not plan around arriving at the gate exactly at sunrise.
See our sunrise guide.
Best transport for the Small Circuit
Tuk-tuk is usually the best-value choice. The distances between major central temples are manageable, and the open-air ride works well between stops.
Best transport for the Grand Circuit
Tuk-tuk still works, but a car becomes more attractive in hot weather because you spend more time on the road.
Best transport for Banteay Srei
For Banteay Srei or other distant temples, I would compare tuk-tuk and car quotes. The longer the transfer, the more valuable air conditioning becomes.
My practical choice
First visit, normal weather, Small Circuit: tuk-tuk. Family or very hot day: car. Photography or independent slow day: tuk-tuk or bicycle depending on gear and fitness.
